Fashion and Eye Color

Perhaps you’ve noticed that eye color can apparently change depending on the color of something physically near the eyes, like a shirt.  One possible reason for this observation is that the colored part of the eye, the iris, reflects ambient light.  Darker irides do not reflect as much light as lighter ones, which results in less perceived eye color change among people with dark eyes.  In contrast, someone with light blue eyes who wears a light green shirt, for example, might have the green light from the shirt reflected off of her blue irides, resulting in the perception of greener eyes than usual.
